NSW: Fire triggers full-scale emergency
A fire in the cargo hold of a British Airways 747 triggered a full-scale emergencyat Australia's major airport today.
The jet was forced to turn back less than 10 minutes after take-off.
The drama unfolded as Flight 16 left Sydney international airport bound for Singaporewith 270 people on board.
One of the passengers has been the public face of the HMS Nottingham crisis for thelast month and was meant to be heading home to the UK today.
Royal Navy spokesman Lieutenant Commander MIKE SOUTER says they were informed therewas a fire in the hold shortly after take-off.
He said the crew were clearly disturbed by the news.
The jumbo pilot declared a mayday and returned to Sydney with emergency services standingby and all runways closed to other traffic.
An Airservices Australia spokesman says a fire alarm in the forward cargo hold alertedthe captain to what has since been confirmed as a a small wiring electrical fire.
It was extinguished by the on-board extinguisher system.
