Qld: Unions take Qld job cuts to industrial commission

By Nikki Todd

BRISBANE, Dec 18 AAP - The Queensland Public Sector Union will take the state governmentto the industrial commission today, over plans to slash more than 1,200 jobs.

State cabinet agreed on Monday to adopt a new Shared Service Initiative which wouldcluster the various departments' corporate services including finance, human resourcesand payroll.

The move would result in the loss of at least 1,200 permanent jobs and up to 800 contract jobs.

Treasurer Terry Mackenroth said the move would streamline services and the savingswould be pumped into health and education.

QPSU organiser Steven Miles said the government had failed to consult unions over thematter and would notify the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC) over thedispute.

"The week before Christmas they've pushed through cabinet a decision to sack somewherebetween 1,200 and 2,000 state government employees," Mr Miles told AAP.

"We believe it breaches their own employment policy and commitments we have in ourenterprise agreement, which include to make a major restructure they have to prove a publicbenefit.

"We don't think they can prove any sort of public benefit."

Mr Miles said workers were tense as they did not know whose jobs were earmarked to go.

"In some ways it would be almost better for them if they knew but they are going tohave to spend the next month or more worrying about whether it's their job that will goor the person next to them," he said.

"Think about what (the government is) doing to all these families, just so they canavoid the glare of parliament and non-silly season media attention."

Mr Miles said no industrial action was planned while the matter was before the QIRC.
